Raby Productions The idea for a simple "do it yourself" video is nothing new, in fact we coupled with the fine folks at Bug me Video to create our first instructional video in the year 2000. During the production of this video I found that I posessed a hidden talent for showing people how to do things themselves and wasn't intimidated by the camera, during the flming I was called "The Natural" several times. The success of the "Type 4 Engine Rebuild Video" was apparent through it's worldwide sales and rave editorial reviews; so popular that a second video was planned on the performance aspect of the Type 4 engine. Unfortunately for the video program our business exploded with Type 4 engine developments in 2001 and that found no time to correctly produce the sequel to the engine rebuild video. In 2002 we did find the time to regroup with the Bug Me Video family to produce "The Type 4 Upright Conversion Video", a step by step guide featuring our proprietary cooling system and how to convert a VW Type 4 engine for use in a Type 1 application. Our desire to complete a performance instructional video series never diminished, even with the successes of other aspects of our business, but the time simply didn't exist to do the job correctly and thoroughly. The guys at Bug Me Video were always willing to assist with any productions we had in mind, but the other challenge was the 700 miles that separates our business locations. Fast forward to 2006... Knowing that the VW/ Porsche world desperately needed further instructional videos similar to the "Bug Me" series, but focused on performance I decided to try my hand at the production myself, since I have a knack for gadgets and really like to show people how to do things correctly. In November of 2006 I converted my basement into a video production studio and began gathering digital video equipment and polishing my video skills in hopes making productions both educational and entertaining, all the while promoting the vehicle we all love; the Volkswagen. Fast forward to January 2, 2008... Early in the week I called the team at Bug Me Video to let them know what I had planned and that I wanted to work with them on the distribution of the video series. They welcomed my efforts and agreed to help with distribution, editing or anything that we may need. The result of this phone call was a collaborative partnership and they will be selling and marketing the efforts of "Raby Productions" as part of their video line up. This was a big key to the success of the series and I was really glad to receive their assistance and understanding since we have been working together for 8 years off and on. To my pleasant suprise while on the phone Rick from Bug Me gave me some pointers about the videos he is constantly asked to provide, but doesn't because he has little or no knowledge of the topics. Most of those topics are things that I do know about and videos I'd like to offer. This was great because it got my mind in high gear and as I walked through the shop I counted two dozen things that people needed to learn about, things that I could show them how to do easily on video. With the evolution of the Vintage VW and Porsche has come a new breed of Enthusiast, it is our primary goal to harness the individual enthusiasm of these hobbyists to keep the VW alive for future generations to appreciate. As I pondered these videos I started rating their importance in my mind and before I knew it we had created an entire tentative production schedule. We plan 3 different levels of videos: "Hot topic" (15-45 minute videos on single, often asked but seldom understood installations or procedures) "Intermediate" (one volume productions on a single topic, these will be 45-90 minutes in duration) "Extensive" (multi volume productions progressively covering a complete engine build up/EFI install/ etc) Now, the videos I have posted here are what I have brainstormed in the past few days after chats with members here, the crew at Bug Me Video and specialists like Marty Staggs, Art Thraen and Len Hoffman. Not all these videos will make it to actual production. It takes a lot of time to create video, edit and produce it, so what I have listed here is a tremendous amount of work and will take several years to complete. The key to keeping the aircooled engine alive is helping the newer members of our following to understand the engine and give them the power to do the job correctly, with confidence. Jake Raby |
